There is also reading one's opponent and adjusting one's behavior as part of a strategy as well.

Naturally. Battle strategies must reflect the present situation. Remaining static can only lead to defeat. That's why more than simply relying on books, experience is the best teacher. Not to imply there is no value in getting familiar with the basics. Everyone has to start somewhere.
